Off-grid AI survival assistant is riskier than Russian roulette, experts warn

Using an offline neural network as a survival assistant in an emergency is a bad idea, specialists caution. In their view, trusting a large language model with matters of health and safety is far more dangerous than playing Russian roulette: instead of professional help, the user risks getting hallucinations that could cost a life.
A developer known for experiments with low-power hardware proved that an LLM can run even on a $10 microcontroller. Performance reached nearly 10 tokens per second, and the output was mostly coherent. Yet the sheer technical possibility of launching a neural network on a cheap device does not make it a reliable advisor in the field.
The problem is compounded by the fact that without connectivity, the user cannot verify the model's answers. If internet access is lost and a person is left alone with nature or a disaster, they must blindly trust every word of the AI. Models tend to confidently produce false information, and in an emergency this can lead to fatal mistakes, from improper wound treatment to misjudging which plants are edible.
Experts emphasize that such tools should be viewed purely as entertainment. For instance, an LLM does a decent job of roleplaying a zombie apocalypse, where the cost of an error is virtual. But when real danger to life is involved, the only sensible choice is to consult professionals rather than an algorithm that may simply invent an answer.
Journalists also remind of another issue: even under normal conditions, neural networks show a tendency to hallucinate, and in a stressful situation a user is unlikely to critically assess the instructions received. Thus, the trendy idea of an "autonomous AI rescuer" turns out to be a dangerous illusion best left on the pages of science fiction novels.
