NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Telescope to Launch August 30 — Here's What It Will Hunt For

NASA and SpaceX have completed a key readiness review for the launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Following the Flight Readiness Review, the mission has been cleared to proceed to the final preparation stage, with liftoff scheduled for August 30. The Falcon Heavy rocket will launch from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 7:26 a.m. EDT (14:26 Moscow time).

The telescope is already enclosed within the payload fairing. In the coming days, it will be transported to the SpaceX hangar for integration with the Falcon Heavy rocket. Once fully assembled, the rocket will be moved to the launch pad for final pre-flight checks.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to become one of the next-generation flagship observatories. Unlike telescopes focused on detailed studies of individual objects, Roman is designed for wide-field observations. It will be able to rapidly survey vast areas of the sky, collecting data on millions of galaxies, stars, and planetary systems simultaneously.

Its primary scientific mission is to investigate dark energy — the mysterious component of the universe believed to drive its accelerated expansion. Roman's observations aim to refine our understanding of dark energy's properties and shed light on the evolution of the cosmos. The telescope will also search for exoplanets. Thanks to its high sensitivity and wide field of view, the observatory is expected to detect new worlds using microlensing and direct imaging techniques, potentially revealing thousands of planets beyond our solar system.
