My home server survived 14 days alone — and the culprit was a loose plug

A home server enthusiast who runs a Jellyfin media server for friends and family left his setup unattended for two weeks while traveling. Despite months of reliable operation, he admitted to feeling anxious about potential failures during his absence. The server had multiple potential points of failure — a 2TB hard drive storing media, the operating system, and various services running alongside Jellyfin. Any of these could have decided to misbehave while he was hundreds of miles away.

The hard drive seemed the most obvious candidate for failure, since drives can fail without warning, and there's little you can do remotely aside from keeping backups. Jellyfin itself was another potential weak point, as media server software occasionally requires updates or restarts. The operating system and network stack could also develop issues over time. Two weeks is enough time for something to go wrong when nobody is around to fix it.

What actually happened surprised him. The server itself ran perfectly throughout the entire period — no drive failures, no software crashes, no system freezes. Instead, the entire setup became inaccessible because of a problem so mundane it was almost comical: a loose power plug.

The server rack was connected to a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), so it remained powered on. However, a separate router mounted behind the rack was plugged directly into a wall outlet. That outlet had a loose connection, and at some point during the two weeks, the router's power cable simply fell out. The server kept running, but without network connectivity, it was effectively dead to the outside world.

When the owner returned home, he found the server powered on but unresponsive. After checking cables and connections, he discovered the router's plug dangling from the socket. Once reinserted, everything came back online immediately.

The author reflects that this experience highlights a common blind spot in home server setups: while we obsess over drive health, software updates, and backup strategies, the simplest physical connections can bring everything down. He plans to secure all cables with cable ties and use higher-quality outlets with tighter grip in the future. The lesson, he says, is that even the most carefully prepared system can be defeated by a loose plug.
