Google's Gemma hits 1 billion downloads — from orbit to India's healthcare system

Google's open-source AI model family Gemma has surpassed one billion downloads, the company announced. Over the past two years, the developer community has published more than one hundred thousand Gemma model variants, forming a thriving ecosystem Google calls the Gemmaverse.
What matters more than the download count, according to Google, is what developers are building with the models. The applications range from space to healthcare, demonstrating the flexibility of Gemma across environments, from local devices to edge infrastructure and orbital platforms.
One of the most striking use cases is in orbit. Teams from NASA, Satlyt, and Starcloud are running Gemma directly on satellites. The models perform onboard image analysis, optimize scarce downlink bandwidth, and route intersatellite communications. This proves that Gemma can handle complex reasoning in some of the most constrained and extreme environments imaginable.
Back on Earth, India's National Health Authority (NHA) integrated Gemma 4 and the Google open-source Medical Data Toolkit into Aarogya Setu 2.0, an app with over 100 million downloads on Android. Using Gemma 4, the app processes complex medical reports into standardized digital formats, helping citizens manage and securely share their health data across different providers. This capability demonstrates how developers can adapt the models for real-world, large-scale public health applications.
The Gemma family has also been deployed at the edge, on local devices, and in space infrastructure, proving its ability to run anywhere. Google originally introduced Gemma to empower developers to build responsible, innovative AI applications, and the community response has exceeded expectations, with the model variants and ecosystem growing rapidly.
The company did not specify a timeline for when the billionth download occurred, but noted that the milestone reflects the growing adoption of open-source AI models in both commercial and research settings. The Gemmaverse, as Google calls it, now includes contributions from individual developers, startups, and large organizations, all building on top of the base Gemma models.
