GNOME gets a stunning Apple-like glass makeover with Aura Glass theme

GNOME users can now transform their desktop into a visually stunning, glass-like interface reminiscent of Apple's design language, thanks to a new theme called Aura Glass. According to a ZDNET reviewer who tested it, the result is "the most beautiful take on GNOME I've ever seen."

Aura Glass is compatible with GNOME versions 48, 49, and 50. It is officially supported on several major Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch Linux, and CachyOS.

The theme brings a dramatic overhaul to the GNOME desktop environment. Its key features include dynamic frosted glass effects, true background blur, adaptive accent colors that change based on the wallpaper, optional blur for application windows, and a distraction-free volume and brightness pill indicator. The theme also extends to the GDM login screen, providing a cohesive visual experience from boot to desktop.

The reviewer noted that until now, GNOME had lagged behind other desktop environments like COSMIC, KDE Plasma, or Hyprland in terms of visual appeal. While GNOME's design philosophy has traditionally prioritized minimalism and maximum usability, Aura Glass demonstrates that this does not have to come at the expense of aesthetics.

The installation process is straightforward, and the transformation is described as dramatic. The theme makes the interface look more modern and polished, bringing a level of visual sophistication that was previously missing from the GNOME ecosystem. With Aura Glass, users can achieve a premium, glassy look without sacrificing the functionality and simplicity that GNOME is known for. The theme is now available for download and installation on the supported Linux distributions.
