Final Fantasy 14 roleplayer survey of 10,000 players reveals just how generic most characters really are

A dedicated Final Fantasy 14 player has compiled a massive census of the game's roleplaying community, giving thousands of players an uncomfortable look at just how unoriginal their characters might be. The Crystal RP Census, created by Reddit user CevicheLemon, gathered data from over 10,000 roleplayers over two months, then anonymized the results for public analysis.
The survey's author tested their own character against the statistics. Their Warrior of Light — a male Hyur born in Ul'dah who now identifies with Limsa Lominsa for backstory reasons — ranked as the second most common gender, fourth most common race, and eleventh most common birthplace among all respondents. In other words, a perfectly average character.
The census covers a wide range of character creation details: gender, race, starting city, class, backstory themes, and personal motivations. With this data, any roleplayer can now compare their own hero against thousands of others and see how closely their story matches the mainstream. For many, the results have been a humbling exercise in self-awareness — most players, it turns out, gravitate toward the same archetypes despite their desire to stand out.
Final Fantasy 14 has long been known for its vibrant roleplaying scene. Players spend hundreds of hours not just raiding and dungeon crawling, but also socializing in character — everything from high-stakes political dramas to cozy tavern scenes and, yes, nightclubs. The Crystal RP Census is the first serious attempt to quantify who these characters really are, giving the community a mirror to reflect on its collective creativity — or lack thereof.
