Fallout creator Tim Cain settles the turn-based vs real-time RPG debate: 'Both have a place'

Tim Cain, the legendary developer behind the original Fallout, has weighed in on one of the most heated debates in the RPG community: whether turn-based or real-time combat is superior. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Cain took a moderate stance, arguing that both systems have their rightful place in the genre and should not be seen as mutually exclusive.

Cain noted that the debate often boils down to a comparison between turn-based combat and "real-time with pause" (RTWP), a system popularized by games like Baldur's Gate, where players can issue commands while the game is paused. However, he believes that neither approach is inherently better than the other, and developers should treat them as tools rather than ideological choices.

Among the advantages of real-time combat, Cain highlighted its natural fit for first-person games (with very few exceptions), faster pacing, and the ability to handle more characters on screen without dragging out encounters. The main drawback, he said, is the difficulty of controlling multiple characters simultaneously. RTWP, while helpful, is not a perfect solution—Cain described it as "a bandaid" that doesn't solve all the underlying problems.

Turn-based combat, on the other hand, allows for careful, deliberate decision-making and is well-suited for tactical battles. However, Cain pointed out a major downside: its slow pace, especially in the later stages of a game when every fight can become a lengthy affair. This can be frustrating for players who prefer a more dynamic experience.

Cain stressed that the choice between turn-based and real-time should not be a matter of tribal loyalty. Instead, he called on the community to evaluate each system based on what it brings to a specific game's design. "Both have their loud, vocal advocates," he said, "but both have a place." His message is a call for nuance in a debate that often devolves into forum fights, reminding players that the best system is the one that serves the game's vision.
