Donnie Yen has been shaping Phantom Blade Zero's fight scenes since 2023

The developers of Phantom Blade Zero have revealed the identity of the mysterious masked character from the trailer shown at June's PlayStation State of Play. It is Hong Kong action legend Donnie Yen, known for his roles in "Ip Man," "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," and "John Wick: Chapter 4."

Studio S-Game announced that Yen has been involved as a creative consultant for the game's martial arts choreography since 2023. His involvement was kept under wraps since the game was first announced. The actor plays Mo Yuan, the father of the protagonist named Soul.

Yen brings more than 40 years of martial arts experience to the project. His stunt team is also working on the fight sequences. In the trailer's description, the creators thanked the actor for bringing "authentic kung fu" to the game.

Attentive fans could have predicted this reveal. Back in 2023, S-Game founder Soulframe Liang named Kenji Tanigaki as the game's "action director" on the PlayStation Blog. Tanigaki has been a member of Yen's stunt team for some 30 years, collaborating with him on at least a dozen projects.

Phantom Blade Zero was originally scheduled for release next month, but was recently delayed to October 29 for additional polish. Yen's star power will likely strengthen the game's position in the Chinese market. A deeper look at the project is planned for next week, on August 17, as part of a PlayStation State of Play stream. Pre-orders are already live on Steam.
