Direct Water Cooling Works on GPU but Fails on CPU in Leaky Experiment

An enthusiast known as TrashBench tested whether PC components can be cooled by running water directly over the chips, skipping the traditional water block. Instead of a copper or aluminum block, he epoxied a 3D-printed pipe fitting straight onto the bare GPU and CPU.

The results were surprising: the graphics card with direct liquid contact ran noticeably cooler than with a professional cooling system. The same approach, however, failed on the processor, where cooling was worse. The setup also leaked and nearly ruined the hardware, though the enthusiast says that is part of the risk in such experiments, and the leaks can be fixed with more epoxy.

The idea of cooling chips with direct liquid contact is not new — computers have been dunked in oil for years. But the difference in behavior between the GPU and CPU under identical conditions is intriguing. In the video, TrashBench offers his own theory, but the explanation remains an open question.

If the experiments continue, the system will still need a radiator to dissipate heat. The author jokingly suggests using a giant metal snake for that purpose.
