Ananda R525 motor locks e-bike wheel in response to theft attempts

Drive manufacturer Ananda has introduced the R525 hub motor with integrated anti-theft protection. The system prevents the bike from being moved once the lock is engaged, but it does not stop a thief from physically carrying the vehicle away, so the feature suits short, low-risk stops such as a quick bakery run rather than overnight street parking.

The protection relies on electronics. After activation via the display or companion app, any attempt to move the bicycle triggers significant electromagnetic resistance inside the motor, immobilizing the rear wheel. Patented control logic ensures the system never engages accidentally while riding.

Weighing 4.2 kg, the R525 clearly prioritizes structural durability over weight savings. Ananda plans two configurations: an EU-compliant version with a rated continuous output of 250 W and up to 42 Nm of torque on a 36 V system, and a higher-output 350 W variant operating at 48 V that delivers up to 50 Nm of torque.

No commercial e-bike models with the new motor have been announced yet, as adoption depends on individual bicycle manufacturers. Ananda envisions the R525 primarily powering urban and city e-bikes.
