Amazon recasts Atreus and Thrud in God of War series, seeking older actors for season 2

Amazon's God of War series is undergoing major casting changes: beyond replacing the actor for Kratos, the studio plans to recast supporting characters as well. According to mp1st, casting for the second season indicates that Atreus and Thrud will be significantly older than in season one.

In the first season, Atreus and Thrud are played by child actors Callum Vinson and Island Austin. For season two, however, producers are looking for teenage performers. The casting calls list the characters under the codenames "Joshua" and "Ruth," with Joshua's description noting that Kratos' son "finds his new identity and grows into manhood." This hints that season two may jump straight into the events of God of War: Ragnarök rather than spreading the first game across multiple seasons.

The Kratos recasting happened under different circumstances: Ryan Hurst, who was set for the role, suffered a bicep tear on set. The injury required surgery, and production was halted. Reports suggest Dave Bautista is in talks to take over the part.

Both seasons are being filmed back-to-back, with production originally scheduled to wrap in April 2027. The hiatus may push those dates back, as filming is not expected to resume until October.

While the show remains on hold, the franchise is gaining new material for adaptation. The next game in the series, God of War: Laufey, launches in February next year. However, PC players will have to wait: PlayStation has temporarily ruled out releasing its exclusives on that platform, despite the substantial revenue from past ports.
