Apple's AirTag trackers offer only partial protection against water, and owners should understand the exact boundaries of this capability. According to the IP67 specification, the device withstands submersion at depths of up to one meter for no more than half an hour, but this does not guarantee survival under other liquid contact scenarios.

Technically, the AirTag cannot be called fully waterproof, since no device can endure every condition. A combination of pressure, time, temperature, or chemicals will eventually defeat the seals. Therefore, it is more accurate to describe the product as water-resistant rather than fully sealed.

The evaluation methodology is defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission. The ingress protection rating consists of two digits: the first indicates resistance to solid particles, from zero (no protection) to six (no dust ingress), and the second covers liquids, from zero to nine. The AirTag, including the refreshed 2026 model, carries an IP67 rating. This means the tracker will not be damaged when immersed in water one meter deep for up to thirty minutes.

The IPX8 level, applied to more protected devices, lacks a strict definition — it only requires safety under conditions more severe than IPX7. However, this class is not claimed for the AirTag, so relying on operation at greater depths is not advisable.

In practice, an accidental drop into a sink, puddle, or even a washing machine during a short cycle will most likely not disable the tracker. But prolonged exposure to seawater, a hose stream, or a deep pool can cause damage. Apple does not offer warranties for liquid damage, so after any water contact, users should dry the device and verify its functionality.

Owners should remember that protection only works when the casing is in its intended state. Cracks, chips, or a loosely closed battery compartment door negate the rating entirely. Additionally, seals degrade over time, and actual resistance may decline even if the device looks fine externally.
