4,000 kids made movies with just a smartphone — no studio, no AI, no budget

Over the past five years, more than 4,000 children from 10 countries have created their own animated films using nothing but smartphones. The project's core idea is to prove that making an animation does not require a professional studio, a large budget, or artificial intelligence. All you need is a phone, a few friends, and a story to tell.
The most critical step is storyboarding. Without a clear plan, filming quickly turns into a chaotic collection of disconnected shots. The organizers strongly advise writing down the key scenes in a phone's notes app before even touching the camera. This helps to understand the direction of the story and avoid getting lost during production. A typical plot structure suggested by the project looks like this: the hero leaves home on a sunny morning, the usual route unexpectedly breaks, a strange task appears, the city starts playing by different rules, and in the end, it turns out that the way out of the maze depended not on the city but on the hero himself. This method keeps the rhythm steady and ensures no scenes are lost.
Sound recording is handled with simple, accessible techniques. Dialogues are recorded in a quiet room, away from the noise of a refrigerator or street traffic. Background sounds like footsteps, a creaking door, or wind can be captured on the same smartphone and later overlaid onto the video using a free app. Music is created from everyday objects: tapping a spoon on a glass, rustling paper, or shaking a plastic bag. This approach makes the audio feel organic and personal.
The project's guiding philosophy is "clay versus neural network." According to the organizers, a handmade cartoon engages viewers much more deeply than a computer-generated one. The reason is that you can see the author's hand in every frame — their mistakes, their creative decisions, their unique touch. It is not about achieving a perfect, polished image. It is about telling a living, breathing story that can be created right now, without waiting for the perfect conditions or expensive tools. The message is clear: if you have an idea, do not wait. Grab your phone, call your friends, and start filming.
