Xbox unveils Gears of War: E-Day controller with $25 premium over standard model

Microsoft has officially unveiled the special edition Gears of War: E-Day wireless Xbox controller, and it is now available for pre-order at $89.99 — a $25 premium over the standard Xbox wireless controller.
As with most special edition Xbox controllers, the hardware inside is identical to the standard model. The differences are entirely cosmetic, but the visual overhaul is thorough. The gamepad features a translucent d-pad topper and X button, a red right joystick, and translucent red triggers. The grips on the back and sides are covered with a textured, leather-like finish that adds a tactile feel and matches the gritty aesthetic of the Gears of War universe.
The controller is designed to complement the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day, which is scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026. The special edition gamepad will ship ahead of or alongside the game's release, giving fans a chance to get their hands on the themed hardware in time for launch.
Microsoft also shared details about related customization options available through Xbox Design Lab. Users will be able to create their own controllers inspired by the same visual language, though the signature red elements — the right stick and triggers — remain exclusive to the limited edition version.
The standard Xbox wireless controller retails for $64.99, so the special edition carries a notable markup. Buyers are essentially paying for the unique design and collectible appeal rather than any technical improvements. Performance characteristics, including latency and response times, are identical to the base controller.
Pre-orders are open now, with deliveries expected to begin closer to the game's release date. This is a typical move for Microsoft, which regularly releases themed controllers tied to major first-party titles, and the Gears of War: E-Day edition is likely to appeal to collectors and fans of the franchise alike.
