Why capping your internet speed to 100 Mbps can fix choppy video calls — and bandwidth isn't the problem

For nearly a year, a tech journalist blamed his Wi-Fi for terrible video call performance. Calls would freeze periodically, but speed tests always showed the full rated speed he paid for. No matter which device he tried, if it wasn't connected via Ethernet, his image would become a smeary mess for the other participants. The fix turned out to be enabling QoS (Quality of Service) in the router settings — a feature that actually limits top speeds. Despite the artificial cap, turning it on completely eliminated the connectivity issues for everyone in the household.
Video calls are far less demanding than most people assume. An HD group call consumes between 3 and 4 Mbps in each direction, while audio-only calls use a fraction of that. Screen sharing is even lighter. Even if you stack a 4K video stream and a game download simultaneously, you're still using only a sliver of a multi-gigabit connection like the one the author had.
The real issue is consistency, not raw bandwidth. During a meeting or family FaceTime session, that small sliver of bandwidth must be available every second without interruption, while every other device in the house competes for the same network path. Conferencing apps can handle scarcity somewhat gracefully — they drop resolution and framerate before dropping video entirely. But when data packets arrive in unpredictable bursts rather than a steady stream, the codec has nothing to work with. No matter how much headroom the connection has, the quality degrades.
QoS acts as a traffic manager, assigning priorities to different types of traffic. Video calls get a guaranteed channel, while background downloads and streaming are deprioritized. The author set a cap of 100 Mbps, which made speed test results drop, but calls stopped freezing entirely. In the router settings, he assigned priority to devices participating in conferences and limited background traffic.
This technology is particularly useful in households with multiple active users. If one person is gaming, another is streaming 4K video, and a third is on a video call, without QoS the video call suffers first. When prioritization is enabled, video conference packets go through ahead of others, while the rest of the traffic waits its turn.
Configuring QoS is straightforward on most modern routers. Typically, you need to log into the web interface, find the QoS or Traffic Management section, enable the feature, and specify which devices should get priority. Some routers also allow setting speed limits for different traffic categories. The result: even with a lower maximum speed, the connection feels more reliable for real-time applications like video calls, online gaming, and VoIP.
