This Doom mod turns the classic shooter into a terrifying tactical horror — and it's already playable

Modder PKmX has released an alpha version of Blackout, a mod for Doom that transforms the iconic fast-paced shooter into a slow, methodical tactical military simulation. Instead of sprinting through levels with a shotgun, players are now expected to clear rooms carefully, take cover, and use proper breaching techniques to survive.
Blackout makes radical changes to Doom's core gameplay. Movement speed is drastically reduced, and the player character is significantly more fragile. Weapons are based on real-life firearms, complete with aiming down sights (ADS) and reloading mechanics. Damage and recoil are calculated according to each weapon's caliber, fire rate, and other realistic parameters. The enemies remain classic Doom monsters, but their behavior has been "tweaked to suit tactical gameplay," according to PKmX. Attacks are deadlier but take longer to charge, and monsters can both suppress the player and be suppressed by them.
A stealth and awareness system has been added: gunfire attracts enemies to the player's location, while staying quiet may allow them to sneak past foes undetected. In motion, Blackout strongly resembles the Stalker series — dark corridors, sudden ambushes, and a constant sense of danger. The mod is available in a playable alpha version for the Zandronum and UZDoom source ports, offering a radically different experience from the original Doom while keeping its iconic enemy roster.
