Things 3.23 Finally Lets You Check Off Repeating Tasks Early and Change Rules on the Fly

Cultured Code has released Things 3.23, a major update to its popular task management app that overhauls the handling of repeating to-dos — one of the most requested improvements from the user community.

Until now, repeating tasks in Things lacked some of the flexibility available to regular to-dos. The 3.23 update closes that gap with several key features:

**Early completion**: Repeating to-dos now display a standard checkbox, just like any other task. Marking a repeating task as done before its scheduled date creates the next occurrence based on the original rule, without breaking the repeat pattern.

**Exception or update rule**: When a user reschedules a fixed-schedule repeating task to a different date, the app now prompts a choice. "Make Exception" moves only that single instance, leaving the rest of the schedule untouched. "Update Rule" changes the recurrence pattern itself going forward — moving a Monday task to Tuesday, for example, makes it repeat every Tuesday from then on.

**After-completion repeat changes**: For tasks that repeat a set period after completion (rather than on a fixed schedule), rescheduling simply moves the task to the new date without any prompt.

**Smart completion**: If a list contains multiple overdue copies of the same repeating task, checking off the oldest one automatically completes all the others.

**Skip without completing**: A new context menu for repeating tasks allows users to skip a single occurrence. The skipped instance is marked as skipped, and the next occurrence is created according to the rule.

**Rename and delete options**: When renaming a repeating task, the user can choose to apply the new name only to the current instance or to all future ones. When deleting a single occurrence, the app asks whether to delete it entirely or just skip it.

Beyond the repeating tasks overhaul, Things 3.23 introduces several other refinements. Users can now drag and drop tasks onto the "Today" panel on iPad when using Stage Manager. Search has been improved with the ability to filter results by tags. The update also includes fixes for bugs related to calendar integration and synchronization via Reminders.

The update is available now through the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Existing users can download it for free. Things 3.23 requires iOS 16.0 or later, iPadOS 16.0 or later, and macOS 13 Ventura or later.
