Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai hits 6 million battery packs — the latest million took just nine months

Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai has produced its 6 millionth battery pack, the company announced. The previous million-unit milestone was reached in November 2025, meaning the factory added another million packs in roughly nine months.

Tesla designs and develops its battery systems in-house, from the chemical composition of individual cells to the final assembly of the complete pack. However, the company does not manufacture battery cells in China. Gigafactory Shanghai sources cells primarily from Chinese supplier CATL and South Korea's LG Energy Solution.

Construction of the Shanghai plant in the Lingang district began in January 2019, and production launched by the end of that year. The factory started assembling the Model 3 in January 2020, followed by the Model Y a year later. Today, the facility has an annual production capacity of about 1 million vehicles. Over more than six years of operation, Gigafactory Shanghai has produced nearly half of all Tesla electric vehicles worldwide.

The Shanghai plant has also marked other major milestones. In August 2024, it produced its 10 millionth electric drive unit. In December 2025, the factory rolled out its 4 millionth China-made Tesla vehicle. In late July 2026, Tesla announced that it had built its 10 millionth electric vehicle globally.
