Switching from Docker to Proxmox LXCs made home lab management finally painless

The author, who had long relied on Docker for self-hosting, found that managing services became a chore as the number of deployments grew. The fix was moving to Proxmox LXC containers, which offer isolation without heavy overhead and make the whole setup easier to keep organized.

At first, Docker seemed perfect: each new service launched in minutes via Docker Compose, with no need to fiddle with virtual machines. The trouble wasn't Docker itself, but scaling. When the container count went from five or six to dozens, each with its own Compose file, environment variables, volumes, and networks, keeping everything tidy turned into a struggle.

Routine tasks like checking logs, inspecting networks, or verifying mounted volumes are simple on their own, but repeating them across dozens of services ate up time and caused frustration. The author wasn't looking to replace Docker, just to find a setup that stayed manageable as the home lab grew.

Proxmox LXC containers, which sit between Docker containers and full VMs, solved that. They share the host's Linux kernel but give each service an isolated OS environment, providing a complete userspace without the resource cost of a separate virtual machine.

The biggest shift was in management style. Instead of juggling config files and dependencies, each service got its own lightweight environment that can be tuned and updated independently. Troubleshooting became easier because issues are now contained within a single container rather than spread across the Docker stack.

In the end, the author moved most self-hosted services to Proxmox LXC and no longer views home lab upkeep as a burden. Docker remains for tasks where it shines, but the bulk of the workload now runs on LXC, making the whole system simpler and more transparent.
