RPCS3 on AYN Odin 3 ARM handheld runs inFamous at 40–60 FPS

The AYN Odin 3 portable console powered by an ARM processor can now handle one of the most demanding PlayStation 3 titles. Reddit user LunarCantaloupe demonstrated that the RPCS3 emulator runs the action game inFamous on this device at speeds ranging from 40 to 60 frames per second.

Earlier, RPCS3 developers officially stated that the emulator now runs 60% faster and consumes 25% less power on ARM64-based systems. This opened up new possibilities for handheld consoles using ARM chips, such as the AYN Odin 3, which runs the Armada OS.

The result is notable because PlayStation 3 emulation has traditionally been considered extremely resource-intensive. inFamous, meanwhile, was one of the best-looking games of its generation, featuring an open world and impressive particle effects, making it especially challenging to run on ARM devices.

However, based on the published video, performance is not entirely stable. The frame rate fluctuates, with noticeable drops during rapid traversal across the game world. This is a typical situation for many modern games, where a CPU or memory bottleneck occurs. Given that PS3 emulation heavily stresses the central processor, the overload of the power-efficient mobile chip, the Qualcomm Dragonwing Q8, comes as no surprise.

Overall, RPCS3 has reached a level where ARM system users need not worry about stable emulator operation. With sufficient computing power and a Linux operating system, which ensures the best performance, emulating PlayStation 3 games becomes a fully viable task.
