NASA extends Voyager 2 science mission by a year with new power management scheme

NASA engineers have extended the operating life of Voyager 2's three science instruments by at least one year by implementing a new power management scheme. The operation, codenamed Big Bang, freed up capacity that secondary systems had been consuming and switched the probe to more efficient backup devices.
The move was prompted by the gradual decline in output from the spacecraft's radioisotope power source. Without the upgrade, part of the science payload would have had to be shut down immediately. Instead, Voyager 2 continues to transmit data from its magnetometer, cosmic ray detector, and plasma wave system.
Launched in 1977, the probe remains one of the most distant active human-made objects. It has been operating beyond the heliosphere since 2018, studying the interstellar medium in a way no other mission can. Signals take nearly 20 hours to reach Earth in one direction, making every saved watt of power critical to keeping the mission alive.
Engineers stress that the new scheme poses no risk to the spacecraft's operation. The simultaneous shutdown of power-hungry systems and the switch to backup hardware were completed without issues. The freed-up reserve is expected to sustain Voyager 2's science program for at least another year, after which new conservation measures will be needed.
