Foldable iPhone may launch in the US only — China and other markets wait longer
Apple is widely expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone next month, but early availability could be far more limited than fans hope. According to Australian outlet ChannelNews, which cites an unnamed "major Chinese component supplier," the initial preorder wave may be restricted to the United States. Buyers in China and other countries would have to wait for a second batch.
The report points to ongoing "supply and pricing issues" as well as "testing issues with production models" that have slowed development and could constrain the launch. ChannelNews based its story on comments from a source within the Chinese supply chain, though the claims have not been independently verified.
Most analysts and industry watchers, including Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, expect Apple to introduce the foldable — possibly branded as the Ultra or Fold — at its September product event. The same keynote is rumored to feature the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, along with the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
Based on reporting by CNET over the past several months, the foldable is anticipated to adopt a book-style form factor first, with a clamshell design similar to the Motorola Razr expected later. The device could have a wide, squat appearance reminiscent of the original Google Pixel Fold. Earlier this week, leaker Ice Universe posted images on X of what appears to be the foldable's screen protector, noting that one side is square while the other is rounded.
Despite the steady stream of reports, rumors, and leaks, Apple has made no official announcements about the device or a launch event. A company representative did not respond to a request for comment. The foldable's development has reportedly been hampered by production challenges and pricing concerns, which may also affect how many units are available at launch and in which markets. As usual, Apple is expected to keep details under wraps until the official unveiling, so buyers outside the US may need to plan for a longer wait.
