DAF trucks to get Level 4 Einride self-driving system on electric models

Autonomous logistics company Einride has teamed up with heavy truck maker DAF to bring its Level 4 self-driving technology to the brand's premium electric truck lineup. The partnership will see Einride's autonomous driving system, called Einride Driver, integrated into DAF's X-series trucks.

The logistics industry is under growing pressure from chronic driver shortages and unpredictable fuel costs. Electric trucks with autonomous capabilities offer a way out: predictable charging expenses and a virtual driver that is always available. That backdrop is what pushed the two companies to join forces.

Jeroen van den Oetelaar, Chief Engineer and board member at DAF Trucks, said the collaboration highlights DAF's commitment to innovation and future-proofing the logistics sector. He added that pairing the company's premium truck platform with cutting-edge autonomous technology will help build a more efficient, safer and sustainable freight ecosystem.

DAF's current electric lineup spans several heavy-duty models. The 12-tonne XB Electric, roughly equivalent to a US Class 7 truck, is aimed at urban distribution, while the XG and XG+ Electric are designed for long-haul operations.

Einride was the first company to deploy Level 4 autonomous trucks on public roads in Europe, and it also operates them on private roads in Ohio. In preparation for regular production, the company has been working to secure access to a suitable DC fast-charging network to support Einride Driver's operations once the system reaches scale.

The deal is with DAF, which is owned by PACCAR, the same parent company behind the iconic Kenworth brand.
