Blue Origin pinpoints faulty oxygen valve in BE-4 engine behind New Glenn explosion

Blue Origin has officially confirmed for the first time that the destruction of its New Glenn rocket and launch infrastructure at Cape Canaveral, Florida, stemmed from a failure in one of the seven BE-4 engines powering the first stage. The accident occurred on May 28, 2026, during a hot-fire test, and the investigation remains incomplete.

CEO Dave Limp said the anomaly originated at the main oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines, a suspicion widely discussed in the industry since the incident. The finding was confirmed through recovered hardware and subsequent inspections. Engineers have run a series of component-level and full-engine hot-fire tests to better understand the failure mode and develop safeguards.

Limp stated that the path to returning the rocket to service is clear, with a target of resuming New Glenn flights before the end of this year. Small modifications to the valve design will allow quick retrofits on existing engines, and updated hardware is already in production, expected to be ready by the end of the month. In parallel, the company continues its fault tree analysis to rule out other potential causes.

The update came ten weeks after the accident. During that period, Blue Origin has been rapidly clearing debris at Launch Complex 36-A and has started rebuilding the launch tower. Multiple sources indicate the company is working at an accelerated pace and sparing no expense to get the heavy-lift rocket flying again. Still, the absence of a confirmed root cause remains a central concern: current measures address the specific failure, but a full understanding of the incident has yet to be reached.
